The Asia-Pacific and MEA winners of ‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2014’ Chosen

Kaspersky Lab has announced the results of the latest regional round of its ‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation’ international student conference.

Kaspersky Lab has announced the results of the latest regional round of its ‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation’ international student conference.

The Asia-Pacific and MEA round took place on March 11-13 at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. Fifteen winners of local competitions in South Africa, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and India came to Seoul to showcase their research papers to a program committee of Kaspersky Lab antivirus analysts, industry experts, scientists and professors.

‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2014’ includes four regional rounds: the European Cup, the Russia & CIS Cup, the Asia-Pacific & MEA Cup and the Americas Cup. The winners of each contest get their places in the Final Round as well as cash prizes to help further develop their projects. Among the topics suggested to participants this year: emerging threats for emerging platforms; securing cloud, virtual and ‘big-data’ infrastructure; future protection technologies; securing corporate infrastructure; and security education.

The winners of the Asia-Pacific & MEA round are:

  • First place – Weizhi Meng from the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, for the presentation ‘Evaluating the Effect of Multi-Touch Behaviors on Android Unlock Patterns’
  • Second place – Jaeho Lee from the Center for Information Security Technologies (CIST), South Korea, for the presentation ‘A Study on Unknown Malware Detection using Digital Forensic Techniques’
  • Third place – Adelen Victoria Festin from the University of the Philippines Diliman, the Philippines, for the presentation ‘Communect: Secure Community Connection Using OpenBTS as an Alternative Base Station’

Camille Salazar from the University of the Philippines Diliman, the Philippines, was awarded a special prize for the best presentation skills from hands of Kyeong ho Son, a journalist of ‘ZDNet Korea’, who participated in the program committee. Camille successfully delivered her presentation ‘SecuriThief: An Online Security Education Tool for the Youth Using True-to-Life Simulations in a Game’.

In addition to the main competition, in which students, young scientists and researchers presented their projects, the ‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation’ program included activities such as panel discussions, expert presentations and workshops.

Kaspersky Lab is happy to congratulate all the winners and wishes them best of luck in the Final round of the conference which will be held in June 2014.

‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation’ is an annual international event financed and organized by Kaspersky Lab. This long-term project brings together students, young scientists and researchers, leading IT security experts and university professors from across the world in a collaborative environment to present and discuss topical cybersecurity issues.
